A new way to brew my coffee

Image by David Robert Wright via Flickr
This is my new coffee maker. It’s called “Chemex” and while the name is quite lame, it really is a beautiful piece of machinery. Maybe “machinery” isn’t the right word because this is a way to brew coffee that is now displayed in the New York Museum of Modern Art. I was telling someone the other night about making coffee in the morning. It’s a beautiful process. It’s not a caffeine dependency as much as it is a sacred ritual, an eternal return to the morning of freshly ground beans, hot water in a kettle, glass, mugs, and horizontal sunlight coloring the entire process.
So now, if you choose to visit my house in England, then you can find me pouring you a fresh cup of coffee, bright and clean in taste, from this lovely device. And you can thank the two extraordinary women who conspired to buy it for me. May they never know the fatigue of missing an afternoon cup of coffee.
