20 Common Grammar Mistakes →
No judgement* here. I mess this stuff up all the time.  *I believe in a very fluid concept of standard language. If enough people out there say that a fish is a cat and everyone knows what is meant by calling a fish a cat then that’s what a fish is. So there’s no reason to get too worked up by this sort of thing.

The Burning Wheel of the Sun
*Title from Litany by Billy Collins —- I took a week to stay in a Benedictine monastery on the Isle of Wight.  It was a time of renewal and re-centering and just general, quiet bliss. I haven’t written anything aside from work-related pieces since early December. My fingers feel funny working across a laptop, trying to form coherent stories. I am still able to form sentences, though they’re not exactly going to make anyone weep or sing.  Here is to hoping that I can get back to dancing along these little keys in a short time. Writing is something like flying a...

The world and time are the dance of the Lord in emptiness.  The silence of the sphere is the music of a wedding feast.  The more we persist in misunderstanding the phenomenon of life,  the more we analyze them out into the strange finalities and complex purposes of our own,  the more we involve ourselves in sadness, absurdity and despair.  But it does not matter much,  because no despair of...

Attack Dog →
New Yorker piece on the nature of negative political ads and the Super-pacs that are now able to fund them.  When you read something like this it really is tough to have much hope for the republic.
